Publisher: Microsoft

Developer: Realtime Worlds

Release Date: February 20, 2007

Decription:
"Crackdown" pushes the action-driving hybrid genre into the next generation with the first ever truly 3-D playground. Gamers will enforce justice by any means necessary in Pacific City, a crime-ridden urban center built to encourage the exploration of the full width, depth and height of the city. Coupled with highly innovative co-op gameplay — a genre first — and an interactive world where nearly anything can be used as a weapon, gamers will be able to create a volatile cocktaiof judicial oppression as they clean up the streets. (description from Ebgames.com)

The Critics

"For every slight slip-up or apparent wrong in Crackdown, there’s a laundry list of perfection and general right that makes this title nearly impossible to put down - like some sort of digital crack. Technically, Crackdown is solid, which is saying A LOT as open ended worlds are the antithesis of the “on rails” adventures cluttering up game store bargain bins. The sound effects are mind-blowing at times, thus making massive explosions methodically created by the user worth all of the setup time. Same goes for explosions and particle effects which actually seem fitting for each kaboom - no matter how big or small. The level design is devilish but fair, and the A.I. of both innocents and baddies is overall pretty believable. The mixture of auto and manual aim with rewards for being a do-it-yourselfer is the way it ought to be in action games. And the sheer number of NPC’s alone in a given city block alone deserves merit. It would be simple to continue here glowing over the radical things that can be attempted and accomplished in Crackdown, but it’s really best to pick it up for yourself and get, er, crackin’. You won’t be sorry."

"If Crackdown were nothing more than a GTA-ish game with the fat trimmed away and some insane physical abilities, hell, that'd be something to be thrilled about. That it represents the best, if not the first, online multiplayer sandbox game on a console is just gravy. Here's hoping the Halo 3 beta-invite pack-in drives sales enough to warrant a sequel. The only thing more fun than stunt-driving with a buddy riding Teen Wolf-style on your roof is thinking about what it'd be like with another half dozen guys, destructible environments, and a bigger box of toys."

90- GamePro
__________________________________________
"I could find things to complain about--there's the wonky rag doll physics, the way gang hit squads sometimes materialize out of the ether, or the fact that every last baddie in the city knows exactly where you are at all times--and certainly, these shortcomings would cripple a lesser title. But the explosive run-and-gun action, dynamic firefights, and vertigo-inducing high jumps absorb most of the frustrations before they can find a foothold. Besides, those are all things the developer can iron out in the all but guaranteed sequel. Crackdown is ridiculously fun, and that Halo 3 beta code might go unused for longer than you think."

80- IGN
__________________________________________
"Crackdown won't last that long, it's uneven, and the story and the music are weak sauce. Some things are great while others areas fall flat (even the bosses are predictable and easy after a while). But overall the thrill of jumping like a mutant kangaroo from rooftop to rooftop is unrivaled! The smart blend of collecting orbs in a wildly vertical setting while constantly feeling the reward of powering up creates an unbeatable sensation of addictive fun. You'll have a blast, even if for a short while."

__________________________________________
"Comparing Crackdown to Grand Theft Auto is tempting: both have the same open structure, similar settings, and appealing lack of concern for bystanders. But when did Grand Theft Auto let you lift a big rig and throw it into a crowd of bad guys, before leaping to safety on top of a skyscraper? When did it let you drive an SUV up a building? Can you and a buddy cram it full of limpet mines and drive it into an oil refinery? If that's got your mind working, this is your game."

__________________________________________
"I'm not going to lie to you, I have to play a lot of games at this job, so when I tell you that I'd rather play Crackdown than just about anything else on my 360, I hope that carries as much weight as I intend. Granted, I don't expect this game to monopolize my time for more than a month, due to the fact that once you've killed all the bosses your only goals are earning the wacky Achievements like keeping a body in the air for an absurd amount of time (hint: use the heat-seeking rocket launcher to air juggle). But a month is a decent life for a game like Crackdown, and more than enough time before the next big game swoops down to steal my 360 away again (Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 for example). Notice that I didn't mention the Halo 3 beta offer during this whole article? That's because it's completely irrelevant when looking at Crackdown, it's a solid game that delivers exactly what it promises: a giant sandbox to blow the crap out of."

__________________________________________
"You'll often find yourself looking around in Crackdown, wondering "Okay, what should I do next?" The game's one flaw is that it doesn't provide much guidance to that question. Its greatest merit, however, is that you and a friend will have no trouble discovering plenty of spectacular answers on your own. The superhero powers and coop mode alone make Crackdown worth recommending. Next time, throw in some more structure - or at least some more gadgets and toys to wreak havoc with when there is no structure - and you'll have a classic must-buy franchise."

78- GameSpot
__________________________________________
"Crackdown feels unfinished. It feels like the developers sat down and crafted a wonderful-looking city and carefully considered how the gameplay and abilities should work, and then they didn't have enough time to plug in enough activities to take advantage of it all. While you'll certainly have a lot of fun playing Crackdown, it's hard not to get the distinct feeling that it was on the cusp of being so much more."

I didn't like it, it went beyond what I thought it would get. They liked it because halo 3 beta came with it lmao.

this is 5 of the 8. The other 3 (Gamespy, Games Radar, and Yahoo Games) haven't posted their review yet.
