As Beowulf, players lead their men, called thanes, into battle, slay the Titans of a dying age and crush the enemies that threaten to annihilate both their kingdom and people. "Unfortunately, Beowulf lacks special qualities, which will hurt it at a time of the year when there are plenty of high-quality games available to buy. However, its historical connection to the poem and current movie tie-in will get it some traction with people interested in either of those elements. And, in all likelihood, its sticker price will drop in a matter of a couple of months, at which point you may want to consider it for its qualities as an unyielding, button-mashing combat game; an inexpensive Gamerscore builder; and a way to spend an afternoon or two bashing the tar out of some walking/running/crawling blood bags. "Our sights weren't set especially high for Beowulf, so at least it didn't disappoint. Even with the support of the upcoming feature film (which supposedly donated art assets), it still manages to oscillate between looking positively stunning to heinously ugly. Overall it's probably not worth checking out, but if you come out of the movie craving more of the cursed king, you'll probably be able to squeeze a modicum of enjoyment out of Beowulf. If that is worth $60 is another question."

"Ubisoft Shanghai and Tiwak did a magnificent job of butchering the reimagining of a classic tale and providing plenty of disposable, derivative gameplay to go along with it. Though you'll eventually understand the new tale, the absurd storytelling often makes deciphering events and motivations as difficult as a non-scholar trying to read the Nowell Codex. As far as gameplay goes, I can understand why a development studio would want to mimic many of God of War's concepts, yet it's still surprising to see it done so badly. Things start out simple, and that's how they stay, right up until the very end. That is, of course, assuming you can bypass an unbelievably aggravating protection sequence where the utter uselessness of your Thanes, heroic, and carnal attacks becomes painfully obvious. What a waste of time."

"From its longwinded narrative to its painfully paced gameplay, none of Beowulf's elements ever gel. Instead of delivering a fully-realized cohesive experience, it comes off like a cobbled-together coat tail-riding cash-in. While there's some satisfying sword-swinging to be had, it's hard to recommend based solely on that, especially when the recent Conan release offers a far better sword-and-sandal epic. If you're looking for a Beowulf fix, catch up with him at the multiplex or library, but best not bring him home to play."

"Beowulf manages to miss the mark on the simplest things. Something is seriously wrong when a player can run through nearly half of the game before accidentally realizing flag locations scattered throughout the environment are actually upgrade stations. The game never explains this in its 10-hour run. You might also want to avoid some of the game's most powerful weapons, such as hammers, as you'll become locked into the preset animation patterns. Enemies are given every chance to stab you to death, while you're stuck finishing an animation in the wrong direction. Not that it matters, as the weapon's bound to break in a few hits, anyway; you spend a good part of the game beating enemies with your fists simply because it's more convenient."
