Do you think that the old characters from Mass Effect 1 are going to appear in Mass Effect 2 or do you think that you will be stuck using new characters? I have a feeling that they are going to use the old characters as well as give you the ability to use new characters. What do you think?

Yes. Captain Anderson, Joker, Ambassador Udina, the Councilors, basically the major characters should stay.

Wrex, Garrus, and Tali should stay and be availible squadmates. But Kaiden, Liara, and ashley - I wouldn't mind if they were all gone. They should introduce new romantic interests

Yes probably, in Star Wars: KOTOR II: TSL many characters that traveled alongside Revan in the first game appear but none mention much about Revan or what happened those 4 years between the first and second game.

I would also expect some of the quest side characters to appear in the sequel... maybe with their roles expanding in the next game.

I Majorly doubt that the Councilors will be in Mass Effect 2, seeing as how I let them die :p But then again, they could be there if you choose to save them... but I don't know if they survive, never saved them anyway :p

I would suspect that Kaiden and Ashley would be in Mass Effect 2, but only one ov them, depending on what you did in the first game.

Same thing for Wrex, except... it's either he's there or he's not.

Then they really should bring more characters.

I'm expecting everyone on the Normandy plus citadel characters. Plus some characters that died such as wrex, kaiden or ashley

Also I would like to see as Grav said the past of your squadmates, their parents, friends, and home..

It's awkward cuz some character's lifes are determined by your decisions, so how will this work in the sequel?

It depends on which one you chose to live in the first one.

I don't know what would happen if you never played the first one. I would guess that when you make a new character, If it's Male, it would be Ashley, if it was Female, it would be Kaiden for the Romantic plot line stuff
then Wrex would be there by Default

Wrex is a must becuase he was the coolest NPC

the council will only be in the next game if you saved them in the first game, the council wont if you didnt save them. when you get mass effect 2 there will be an option to use your save from mass effect 1 to determine story and characters, though im not sure if your level will be the same and all of your items the same. im not sure of the default settings either for those who want to start fresh from the 2nd one.

also i read that alot of characters will be in the 2nd from the 1st and a few of the squad mates from the 1st too.

I just want Wrex... I could care less about the rest of the squad.
