Coming from Sony's recent Playstation media event (at least something good comes from those, hoozah!) is a brand new, all in-game footage, delicious ball of awesomeness trailer for Mirror's Edge. And did we already say it's a delicious ball of awesomeness? Because it is. Witness DICE's upcoming and "true" first person experience as main character Faith jumps from building to building, leaps through the air, slides, glides and kicks the crap out of gun wielding baddies with ... her legs. We're excited and truly believe that Mirror's Edge has that special something. Enjoy!

Wow, this game reminds me how games are getting so bland with the color use......everything looks nice and bright and fun!

Mirror's Edge reflects on Unreal Engine 3

Although they have an in-house engine for the Battlefield series (Frostbite), EA DICE has gone with Epic's mega-popular Unreal Engine 3 for the Parkour-inspired Mirror's Edge. According to the development team (via Electronic Arts PR), the reason was that the Mirror's Edge project began early on in Frostbite's development, so they decided to use the more-developed Unreal technology instead.

DICE is also developing "a new lighting solution that truly makes Mirror's Edge stand-out visually." If you haven't had a chance to check out the trailer, do so now. Full statement after the break.
Gallery: Mirror's Edge

"With Mirror's Edge we deliberately set out to create something that was different from Battlefield. Frostbite is a very powerful engine but this project started a long time ago and at that time Frostbite was still being developed and was very closely supporting the Battlefield Bad Company team.

"Because of this we made the decision to develop on UNREAL technology. In addition, because we have a very unique art-style in the game we have been developing a new lighting solution that truly makes Mirror's Edge stand-out visually."

Mirror's Edge Impressions

We hit the rooftops with Faith, a runner in DICE's upcoming parkour-inspired adventure, Mirror's Edge.
By Dan Chiappini, GameSpot AU Posted May 7, 2008 4:23 am PT

While the EU PlayStation Day may have been Sony's event, the company was still keen to share the spotlight with other publishers, showcasing some of their upcoming games for the PlayStation 3. EA was on hand to show off a video--allegedly entirely made up of in-game footage--giving media a look at the upcoming game Mirror's Edge, an Orwellian first-person parkour--or free running--game being developed by Digital Illusions.
The demo was light on dialogue and music, instead letting the action speak for itself as the camera soared from building to building. When information is heavily monitored and you need to get an important message through, where do you go? Faith apparently; a woman who makes a living diving, rolling, and balancing across thin pipes hundreds of feet above street level. Details on the game's story are still sketchy, but when a crime goes down and you're wanted for questioning by the government, you do what any smart traceuse would do: You take to the roofs.

Mirror's Edge

Check out the first-seen footage of Mirror's Edge in this trailer.
Watch | Download

Presented from a first-person perspective, the cinematic opened with Faith running, arms akimbo, before jumping on and climbing up a chain-link fence, sliding under a set of low steel pipes and performing a barrel roll as she landed. It's not unlike trying to imagine Assassin's Creed from a totally different point of view. Along the way, she slid down pipes, ran sideways along building walls to bridge gaps, and used what looked like power cables as a makeshift zip line.
The world around her was a high-resolution cityscape made up of office buildings with reflective windows, although as far as we could tell, her character model was not reflected back at any point. Below, at street level, police cars were visible with their lights flashing, perhaps looking for her as she moved between the structures. Faith's hands and feet were visible as she moved and are quite prominent as she reaches to grab a ledge to pull herself up at the tail end of a jump.
The end of the video showed her sliding down an escalator, and while it looked like controlled falling, there was a slight hint of panic in her movements--as you'd expect from a someone on the run. The last scene showed Faith disarming what looked to be some kind of security officer decked out in black. Here, she used her hands to grab his shotgun and wrestle it from his hands, before dispatching him with a swift kick to the back of the head.
It's all still a bit mysterious at this point, and we'll be interested to follow the development of the storyline and gameplay. How well Faith's character movement translates to a control scheme is yet to be seen, but already Mirror's Edge has piqued our interest. We are sure, though, that those afraid of heights or prone to motion sickness are being given due warning.

True but I like that it is first person game where the video settings are not set on "grey"

Plus the action looks great, reminds me of AC....

I'm not sure about a game that is first person and uses parkour. I've said that for a long time about this game and I still feel that it's a valid statement. What's the point of using parkour in a game where you can't see how cool it looks?

yeah lol you said that about this game when i posted about it ages ago. Parkour purists would just tell you that "parkour is not about looks you want that go for free running if you want efficiency and functionality go for parkour". IMO thats stupid its a game its spose to look cool and stuff so i agree with you but i still think it will be a great game and if they add an optional 3rd person view or something that might be nice.

^Correct. But as you said... this is a game. It's supposed to look cool and the whole point of putting parkour into a game is so that it looks cool.

yeah pretty much right on the money there hope it turns out great maybe they'll have the replay feature that san Andreas had so if you think you did something awesome you can watch that and change angle and such.

Edit*
after realizing that a vid was posted...and watching it i completely agree with gravity's dislike for the first person style camera doesn't look that great imo in that view.

I think it is good, if it was 3rd person it would take away from the "uniqueness" the game would have.
