Default Borderland Revealed (to have 4 player FPS co-op)

Quote:
With a tag line like "Diablo meets Mad Max," how can you not take the bait? Gearbox Software's Borderlands is the cover story in the September issue of Game Informer. Described as an RPG-shooter, with 4-player online co-op support, Borderlands appears to mimic the space gansta aesthetic that was so brilliantly captured in the dusty Gibson films of yesteryear -- not unlike id's new project Rage. How Diablo elements play into the dune buggy battlin' should be explained once the full cover story has been perused.

Developer Gearbox has earned critical props for its Brothers in Arms games, which are often overlooked in the rotting heap of World War II shooters. The latest in that series, Hell's Highway (due in November), showed great promise during an E3 demo, but once again, was lost in the swirl of game previews, and has an uphill battle at retail, facing a very competitive holiday lineup. But if Gearbox stays dedicated to top-tier technical and production qualities, as seen in Brothers in Arms, than Borderlands could be the commercial success this studio is capable of developing. This is one to watch.

the game is being developed by Gearbox, the developer of the Brothers in Arms games (for those of you who didn't read the quote box).

who can't be excited for some 4 player FPS co-op action?!

I love Mad Max!!! Wooot! I get to be a desert post-apocalyptic badass?! I'm there... with bells on... so that my enemies may hear them and come running to their deaths. Death by bells.
And 4 player co-op is sweet!

and in some interesting news, this game will REQUIRE a hard-drive!

I believe this is the first game to actually require it on 360.

Quote:
Following a demo presentation at Games Convention in Germany today, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford confirmed to 1UP that Borderlands -- his upcoming "Indiana Jones meets Mad Max" sci-fi four-player co-op first-person shooter -- will require a hard drive if players choose to play it on Xbox 360.

Because of the way the game procedurally generates everything from weapons to armor, Borderlands has different requirements from typical first-person shooters. "If it weren't for where the 360 and the PS3 have gone, with big hard drives, and lots of memory, and powerful processors, there's no way you can conceive of this as a console game," Pitchford said.

When asked about recent mixed statements from Microsoft about whether a game that requires a hard drive will be allowed on 360, Pitchford confirms that such a release is possible. "I don't know if [Microsoft is] gonna complain about that, and I don't want to be in the middle of a controversy there, but you need space," he said.

hmm...i'm just hoping that Microsoft doesn't pull some bs where they force the developer to make it so the hdd isn't required.

How long can M$ hold out if developers need the room to make great games? You won't win the console wars by limiting your developers like that.

Microsoft is trying to make the 360 appeal to everyone...which just really isn't possible. Right now the Wii is more of a casual console while the PS3 and 360 are for more hardcore gamers. Microsoft just can't grasp it seems.

The Core/Arcade console truly is useless. The only point it serves is to show that hey, you can buy a 360 for only $30 more than a Wii...but it comes with no memory...
The only way it'll sell is that clueless parents will go out to buy their kid a 360 this Holiday, see the cheap one, and just buy it not knowing how much of a waste it is.

and now it isn't required:

From the official Gearbox Software forums:

Hey everyone, my name is Steve Jones and I'm the lead programmer on Borderlands. While we are doing some amazing things in this game, the Xbox 360 version will NOT require a hard drive. The game will take full advantage of the hard drive if it is present, but again, it will not be required.
