August 26, 2007 - At this year's Penny Arcade Expo, Eidos was showing the world the first playable demo of the upcoming action title, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. Along with a preview of the game, we had the chance to sit down with David Bamberger, senior marketing manager for the game, and we found out quite a bit for what's in store for this new title.

As this is the same team that created Freedom Fighters, they've drawn inspiration from the past title. "We wanted to create a tactical shooter that had a lot of great tactical ideas in it, but also told a great story." With that being the case, we were curious about another Hitman title, as that seemed to fit the bill rather well, but it's not quite what they had in mind. "Hitman is very cerebral," said Bamberger. "Agent 47 used whatever tools he had available, but we decided to go for something a bit more fast paced."

With the level being shown taking such obvious inspiration from Michael Mann's Heat, we were curious about what other influences there were in Kane & Lynch, and the inspirations come from excellent sources. Movies like Heat, Dog Day Afternoon and Taxi Driver and other stories that used anti-heroes were all looked at when creating the game because IO wanted to explore how far you could take these monsters and make them human, which is certainly an interesting angle to take.

When looking at these anti-heroes, IO wanted to tell an interesting story while giving players some insight to understand why these people are doing what they're doing, and the setting for Kane & Lynch sounds like it will be fairly deep with a slew of things to uncover during your journey. "Kane is a member of The Seven. The Seven is this criminal organization which had its final job in Venezuela, where everything went wrong," Bamberger explains. "The mission was supposed to be their last one before they retire, and as Kane's the lone survivor, he takes the diamonds they were heisting, sells them and takes the money and runs. During his escape, he gets caught and is put on trial and sentenced to death for murdering several Venezuelan soldiers during the heist."

As the game begins, we find Kane as he's being transported to his execution, when his convoy is attacked en route. He's pulled out of the armored car only to find himself next to Lynch, which leads to a great "who the hell are you?" moment. It turns out that Lynch is an agent of The Seven, who aren't so dead afterall. They're pissed and they want their money back. As most villains do, they take Kane's wife and child hostage to coerce him into giving the money back. Since Kane lost the money when he was put under arrest, The Seven is willing to spare his wife and child and just kill him in exchange for the balance being worked off. To keep Kane safe, The Seven assigns him a bodyguard, Lynch.

During thier assignments, Kane soon discovers that Lynch isn't good at his job and there's something very wrong with him. When he's off his medication, things go south, making it something where Kane actually has to babysit his would-be captor and to add fuel to the fire, there's a mutual hatred between the two, adding tension to the story. Lynch, on the other hand, resents Kane, as he wants to be in charge, but Kane is the professional and takes command of the situations, where Lynch is just a mere poser, ready to explode and cause harm to everyone around him. The most obvious thing to do would be for Kane to kill Lynch and go on the offensive to save his family, but that's not in the cards as The Seven would dispose of the family Kane the moment you got Lynch out of the way.

This dynamic has caused instability throughout the game, and it's this volatile state that IO wants to nurture. "IO has created an environment of so many things that you can't trust, so you really have to be on your toes through the entire game," Bamberger said. "Lynch can go off at any moment, your crew can betray you, or you could even betray your crew. In a nutshell, this game is a violent and chaotic journey of two psychotic men who hate each other. With state of the art 'bang bang' action in between."

With things constantly in motion and betrayal a constant worry, it's sounding like the narrative will be a really engaging experience. Combined with the enjoyable action that we experienced while playing the game, it's shaping up to be quite a bit of fun. It's sounding like the final product will be on par with a giant action movie for your home video game consoles, and that's fine by us.
Hmmm... sounds different. I'll be pissed if I get passed a really hard part of the game and one of the guys on my "team" shoots me because they're a retard. Looking forward to it!

yeh looks good, i looked forward to it from seeing the first trailer.
