Default Dark Messiah: Impressions

GC 2007: Dark Messiah First Look
Ubi's action RPG is coming to the 360.
by Tal Blevins
August 28, 2007 - At this year's Game Convention in Leipzig, Germany, we had our first chance to see Dark Messiah for the Xbox 360. As you may know from the PC version that was released earlier this year, Dark Messiah is a first-person action RPG. It's set in a high fantasy world, so expect plenty of goblins, orcs, and undead roaming through castles, keeps, and dungeons.

You can play as one of four classes: warrior, archer, rogue, or wizard. Warriors and archers are skilled at combat, melee and ranged respectively. Rogues are specialists of sneaking, picking locks, and backstabbing foes. Wizards are, of course, trained in the ways of magic, and use spells as their primary form of attack. Unlike the PC version of Dark Messiah, skills will simply unlock based on your class in the console version instead of having you pick from an open skill tree. This will make for a game that's more focused on the specific classes, and potentially open the game up to greater replayability as the experience of playing as the warrior will be very different than that of a rogue.

Although Dark Messiah will be pretty much the same experience on the X360 as it was on the PC, there will be four new levels in the console version of the game. One of the new levels we saw featured a huge waterfall, and will server as a tutorial level to get you familiar with the game world. In addition, the Xbox 360 version will include an autolock feature to aid with combat, although it can be turned off if you wish.

While the single-player side of the game is essentially the same, the multiplayer portion has been totally revamped for the 360. Expect much smaller maps for the Xbox 360, with fewer players on each; the game will support up to 12 players on the eight maps. In addition to the standard deathmatch, team deathmatch and conquest modes, there is also a new multiplayer type in the Xbox 360 version: blitz. In blitz, each team starts at their spawn point and must eliminate the other team. While it sounds like team deathmatch, the twist to blitz is that there is no respawning, so once you're dead it's game over for you until the next round.

The team at Ubisoft plans to have downloadable content for the game post-launch. While nothing was definite as of yet, Ubi did say they were considering new maps, of course, as well as the possibility of one new class for both single-player and multiplayer. We were also told plans were in the works to release a demo one to two weeks before launch, which will include one single-player and one multiplayer map.

Although this is the first time we've seen the game on the 360, the build that was demoed at GC was 80% complete, so the team at Ubi is nearly done with the console translation. Look for Dark Messiah to hit the Xbox 360 sometime in November of this year.
This game is progressing with nearly no hype so I'm hoping instead of pulling a Two Worlds on us that this game will actually be more than is expected of it. We need some new fantasy RPG elements on the 360.
