Default Epic Preps Unreal Engine 4 For "Next Console Generation"

Epic Preps Unreal Engine 4 For "Next Console Generation"

Epic president Mike Capps guesses the next console generation will begin anywhere between 2012 and 2018 — and when it does, Unreal Engine 4 will be already waiting for it. At least, that's what Capps told an audience Microsoft's Gamefest 2008 in Seattle this week, according to a Gamasutra report.
Said Capps:
"We've got Unreal [Engine] 4 in production right now... it's going to be in the next console generation - our rough guess is 2012 [to] 2018."
Tim Sweeney also has a guess about what the platforms will be at that time, and in what order Epic will address them:
"Version 4 will exclusively target the next console generation, Microsoft's successor for the Xbox 360, Sony's successor for the Playstation 3 - and if Nintendo ships a machine with similar hardware specs, then that also. PCs will follow after that."

Yeah, the Wii should be considered a next-gen system. It sells more than the PS3, but the graphics suck and the games are like all E for everyone.

Cool info. I liked the little Wii diss. It's a fun system but it doesn't hold my interest long.

plus the specs for the wii are so low, they compromised so much for the motion control, hopefully the next contender made by nintendo actualy looks good!

The Wii is really running the same specs as the Gamecube, just updated versions of the hardware. The graphic card, and processor are in the same family, which is not what most consoles do. Helps Nintendo make more money over all. I think it was Nintendo that said graphics at this point are not really what will sell consoles, but it is user interface, and gameplay. They said that graphics can't get that much better at the release of every console.

Also, Nintendo did not compromise on hardware. I think it was more of a way not take that big of a risk with the Wii, in case it did not do so well. They did not spend extra money in other parts of the console for no reason.

Well, for me, it was fun for the first week. But the lack of huge titles really did it in.

Same here. It was fun for the first week but it's not a console like the 360 in which you play almost every day. It's fun playing the occasional Wii Sports with people but then it gets boring.

they compromised alot to keep the price low so it'll be avaliable for poorer, and low power consumption too. doing this makes me wonder if nintendo will ever want to think ahead, and have kickass graphics, and gameplay. unless they somehow manage to make it extremely low cost.

I thought the physics engine was determined by the developers. And that the game houses the physics engine, not the console.

physics vary between games. but usually there is a physics engine in a game engine. though not all developers use the engine by itself, usually its heavily modified to fit their game, or uses a game engine then an entirely different engine to handle something else.
