Default Xbox 360 External Blu-Ray Drive?

Rumorang: Xbox 360 external Blu-ray drive ready, waiting

blu-box

Aw, and we were just starting to miss our Blu-box graphic ... Sure enough, after several months of peaceful bliss, here we are again on the verge of an Xbox 360 Blu-ray announcement! Or not. Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology Corp. (not to be confused with plain old "Toshiba Corp.," which is apparently "strictly against Blu-ray") has allegedly been contracted to manufacture an external Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360, reports X-bit labs. The drives are rumored to retail at around $100 to $150 in an attempt to cut into PlayStation 3 sales (combine a $150 drive with the Xbox 360 Arcade, for example, and the total cost would be $350).

X-bit labs speculates Microsoft may launch the external drive this holiday, but with reportedly low sales, Blu-ray could likely wait until a proper CES unveiling. Still, we've got TGS popping off in mere hours and Blu-ray's clock ticking down every day. No time to waste then?

I don't understand why Xbox360 owners wouldn't want an option to play Blu-Ray movies....I mean yea it's Sony, but Blu-Ray does look and sound amazing...that's all that should matter

I've got a PS3 that is really only useful for Blu-Ray so I won't need this.

I will not needs this because of this, its called streaming Netflix. You can get all the HD movies. I don't need to go out and get a $300 blueray for my 360.

As good as the picture is, I don't think its worth it. I mean what's the difference between HD and Blu-Ray? Nothing significant.

I thought there was a rumor about this a while ago that was shot down by Microsoft saying they would never use Blu-Ray?

that would never happen. they only make significant hardware changes or storage mediums in a later generation of console games. it would cost publishers too much to make games in both dvd, and bluray, and developers to optimize them both. and everyone would have to upgrade if they become bluray exclusive games.

HD - High Definition. Standard resolution is 720p, Full HD is 1080p. Successor to the standard TV resolutions, with HD having 2x as many pixels as SD.

Blu-Ray - Disc form factor storage medium. Successor to DVD, and capable of holding about 6x more information than a DVD9. Standard read speeds are 2x (equivilant of 8x DVD), and 50GB dual layered discs (with future discs planned at 500GBs).

Thats the difference.

Chances are if you download HD Films from Netflix, or Xbox Live, it has video resolutions of 720p and lower, and has compressed audio too. All Blu-Ray Disc based films have resolutions of 1080p, and most have uncompressed audio. And special features even in HD (if your into special features, im not).

If you have a 1080p HDTV with 5.1 Surround Sound or better, then Blu-Ray is wayy better. 720p and sub 5.1 sound users are better off using download services.

Well, Sony is M$'s biggest rival. Doesn't surprise me.
