Dean Takahashi, the author of Opening the Xbox, reports today on the Mercury News’ A+E Interactive blog that Microsoft is designing a handheld console that combines video games, music and video in one portable device.
"The Microsoft product would compete with Sony, Nintendo and Apple Computer's products, including the iPod." claims Takahashi, who is currently working on a book titled “The Xbox 360 Uncloaked” that takes you behind the development of the Xbox 360. According to Takahashi, leading the handheld project is J Allard, together with Xbox 360 system designer Greg Gibson and Xbox CFO Bryan Lee. Takahashi clarifies that even if the device is being touted as the “iPod killer”, functionality and feature wise it would be similar to Sony’s PlayStation Portable. Finally, Takahashi points out that the project is in its early stages as a result of the recent release of the Xbox 360, which kept busy all the engineers working on the Xbox division until four months ago.
