Ed Boon Says Mortal Kombat 9 Going For The M

Despite financial turmoil at Mortal Kombat publisher Midway, the Chicago-based MK team is soldiering on with the ninth fighting game in the series, currently known only as MK9. Series co-creator Ed Boon says it will definitely be M-rated.
Boon has been dropping small tidbits about the bloody fighting game sequel via his Twitter account, writing "Motion capturing special moves & fatalities today....they are kind of sick!!" Boon also backs up what he told us last year during an interview at Comic-Con, that Mortal Kombat 9 will be a Mature rated game—and it "isn't going to have Superheroes in it"—unlike the T-rated, toned down Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.
"People want an M-rated MK....dammit we will give them an M-rated MK," Boon writes. He previously ponders "I hope we aren't taking these too far."
We've talked to a couple MK team members over the past year who have told us similar things, that MK9 would be "disgusting" in its violence, a return to form that we expect will be cathartic to longtime Mortal Kombat fans turned off by the less gory MK vs. DC... and maybe even a few of the game's developers.

Hopefully the achievements will be a little less hardcore this time.

Hopefully they can make the gameplay great with this one. MK games have been embarrassing when held up to the standards set by Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter.

I wouldn't go as far as to say the gameplay is embarrassing. It's decent enough if you are a casual fighting game fan, as in, you like to mash buttons when playing fighters, which a lot do. There is also the gore as well which many enjoy.

This is one game that Midway said they will continue to produce even though the company is going under. They fell that the MK series will make them more valuable for someone to purchase the company.

Yes. I think that is a wise move. People will continue to buy MK games... they are unique in style if nothing else.

See, button mashing can also work to a degree in something like Soul Calibur. But Soul Calibur also has some depth for people that want to take the time and master the game.

There usually isn't much to master in MK games besides memorizing fatalities.

I think you are exaggerating a bit there. Granted, MK isn't a quality fighting game like Soul Calibur etc. are in the classical sense, but it's still fun for a short while if not longer. Imo of course.

Remember MK was the first fighter to actually have a story line and to expand beyond the button mashing fighters. Yes it may not be as in depth as Soul Calibur. My brother is suppose to be a MLG player for Soul Calibur and I beat him about 50% of the time, and I only played the game maybe three times. Most of my moves were button mashing, mixed with a little strategy for dodging and moving.
