This topic sure to be a hotbed of commenting action. Yesterday Microsoft announced that Games for Windows Live, the PC-based equivalent of the Xbox Live service, has changed to a completely free business model. After a lukewarm launch against PC service powerhouse Steam the Games for Live service has ended the Gold/Silver distinction for PC gamers that Xbox Live subscribers are subjected to. Changing to a free model means gamers can compete in cross-platform gaming (where applicable) at no additional charge. The question now remains, does this move signify a a change that must be made to the Xbox Live structure or are the services two completely different beasts. Consider, only a handful of games and features exist on the PC side of Live and with strong competition from other free services it's a move Microsoft had no choice but to make to survive. So, what are your thoughts on Games for Windows Live going free?

That's about as much free gaming as you'll get from Microsoft .. it probably wont change the fact that we still have to pay.

^Doesn't really matter if no one plays it. It's not fair to those who play the same games on the 360 as on the PC. But they get it for free .. and we know M$ loves their money.

Hmmmm ... well, if I was running a business, and millions of people still played on my service, even though it costs money, but I had my service on somewhere else, and it was struggling, I would make it free to try and lure people into play it because it is free, and then charge them money when I have enough people playing it again.

**** microsoft. they'll be getting criticized about how cross platform play costs console gamers but not pc gamers. xbox live will eventually be free, its sure as hell not going any higher, and not staying the same. either there'll be a price cut, or it'll be free soon.

@nintendogs. its not a rumor, its official. and since its official, its already in effect for games released and future games.

also theres supposed to be a gfw, interface change. kinda like the new dashboard, but it wont look like that, and they might make gfw a standalone client

I'm with Redline. If I were M$ I would still charge for Live on the console. That doesn't mean I like it or even really agree with it but I understand it from the business side. When you quit playing on Live/quit paying for Live... then they might need to change how they do things.

^Well it's not like people don't play Live on the PC. Obviously their are more on the console, but that doesn't mean one should be free and one shouldn't. I really don't think making it free will bring in loads of new gamers.

Exactly. Making it free won't bring in a bunch of new gamers. It will just make the current players happier... which if they are paying/playing then they must be happy, right?
